And I want to cry.
Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon hasn’t identified any front-runners in the search for the Rochester Americans coach yet, but as of Thursday at least one applicant now has strong ties to the organization.
Chuck Weber, who guided the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones to the Kelly Cup title in 2008 and again this spring, has let the Panthers know he’s very interested in coaching the Amerks.
“It’s time to move up,” Weber said. “I don’t think there’s much else to accomplish here and I know I’m prepared for it. I’ve worked hard on developing players and creating a winning environment in Cincinnati, and it’s time to do that in the American (Hockey) League.”
Weber said that in his four ECHL seasons, 60 players were called up and played more than 1,000 AHL games.
He has interviewed for at least four AHL head coaching jobs, but his roots to western New York make the Amerks’ job even more appealing.
“From my standpoint, getting a chance to coach in my backyard would be unbelievable,” he said.
Maybe we can persuade him that Hamilton is almost like his backyard. It’s not that far from New York (state)……….. >_<
